Update a page or write a new article? A Search Console content worksheet
Connect a relevant query to the page a reader receives, then decide whether to update, create or consolidate content using verified material.
When a website gets search impressions but few clicks, find the query and the page behind the number before commissioning another article. A site-wide click-through rate combines different pages and reader needs. It does not identify a specific editorial task.
This worksheet uses Google's Search Console performance documentation to organize a content review. Use data from a property you are authorized to access. If you do not have that data, leave the worksheet blank rather than estimating traffic.
Define the comparison before interpreting it
Choose the search type and date range in the performance report. Keep country and device conditions comparable when reviewing changes. Select a period appropriate to the site's volume and seasonality; this workflow has no universal click threshold.
Clicks, impressions, CTR and average position have distinct definitions. Google's performance-report documentation also explains that grouping data by query or page affects aggregation. A page's CTR and the property-wide total are not interchangeable comparisons.
Move from a query to the page a visitor receives
Choose a query with impressions that relates to the company's actual business. Filter for it, inspect the Pages dimension and record the URLs shown. Open those pages and ask what the visitor can do after reading them.
If the page lacks the answer, a more persuasive title cannot supply it. If the answer is present but the description misrepresents it, review the description. Google's snippet guidance says snippets primarily draw on page content and may use the meta description. Editing the latter does not let you prescribe every query's snippet.
When two URLs appear for a query, inspect their purposes before declaring a problem. A concept explanation and a service page can serve different tasks. Multiple URLs alone do not establish harmful competition.
Assign an editorial action to the actual gap
The following choices are editorial recommendations, not Google performance guarantees.
| What the page review finds | First action to consider | Completion check |
|---|---|---|
| Useful answer with missing or outdated conditions | Update the existing page | Reader can assess applicability |
| A distinct question the current page cannot naturally cover | Create a new page with relevant links | It contributes useful new information |
| Suitable content with an inaccurate title or description | Correct the metadata | Search promise matches the page |
| Substantially duplicated content | Evaluate retention or consolidation | Existing readers still reach useful information |
| Query unrelated to the business | Deprioritize it | A more relevant reader task is available |
Before consolidating pages, map their existing URLs to an appropriate destination. Before writing a new page, decide which existing explanation or service it should help the reader reach. The service-page guide can help distinguish those purposes.
Turn the decision into a source brief
| Query or reader need | Current URL | Specific missing information | Verified material | Editorial decision | Review conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fill from actual records | Exact URL or no current page | One clear gap | Company text or checkable source | Update, create or defer | Save the filters |
If the information is missing, ask the business owner for the service boundary, procedure or product document. Google's content-quality guidance encourages original information and added value. Rephrasing another article cannot establish your company's own delivery conditions.
Open GEO Console's article tool accepts a topic, company website and supporting text material. After preparing the brief, use verified information to shape a draft and check its claims and links before publishing. The tool does not read your private Search Console property or approve facts on your company's behalf.
Keep the evidence behind the decision
Record the edited URL, publication date and substantive changes. Once enough comparable data is available, review the relevant queries and pages with the same conditions. Also inspect whether the page now helps the reader complete the intended task.
Search Console data describes Google search performance. It does not directly measure citations in ChatGPT, Doubao or another AI product. Use a separate AI visibility observation record for those answers. A change in CTR by itself cannot establish that the edit caused it.
